The hidden denominator
Regional dashboards often show a number without revealing how many countries contributed to it. If every country is present, the average may provide a useful orientation. If most are absent, the same visual treatment creates unjustified confidence.
The revised Humain Alert profiles publish coverage as a fraction. For example, a latest-year homicide average based on four reporting countries in a 54-country Africa grouping is labelled 4/54 and is not presented as representative of the continent.
Country average or population-weighted average?
An equal-country average gives Morocco and Nigeria the same weight. A population-weighted average gives more weight to the experience of people in larger countries. Both answer reasonable questions, but they are not interchangeable.
| Method | Question answered | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Equal-country average | What is the average reporting country? | Small and large populations count equally |
| Population-weighted | What does the average resident experience? | Large countries dominate |
| Official regional aggregate | What does the source’s published method report? | Method can differ by source |
Years create a second coverage problem
A region may have observations for many countries, but not for the same year. Averaging each country’s “latest” value mixes time periods. Restricting to one year improves synchronization but may reduce coverage. Humain Alert names the range when years differ and avoids implying a simultaneous result.
Regions are analytical choices
“Europe,” “Africa,” “South America” and “Arab World” are not produced by identical institutions or membership rules. The Arab World grouping used here is a transparent list of 22 codes; Europe and Africa are geographic lists maintained in the site. Readers should not assume that every publisher uses the same boundaries.
Our aggregation rule
- Prefer an official source aggregate when one exists and is documented.
- Otherwise display an equal-country average only with its coverage fraction.
- Do not interpret weak-coverage results as regional facts.
- Keep country lists and calculation rules public.
- Use the profile text to identify missing and stale contributors.
Coverage is not a footnote to the average. It is part of the value.

Evidence note: Sources were checked on 7 Sep 2026. Publication years differ because each institution follows its own release schedule. Humain Alert preserves those dates instead of presenting the series as simultaneous.
