What this indicator measures
The indicator records intentional homicides per 100,000 people. Rates make countries with different population sizes more comparable than raw totals.
How Humanity Alert transforms it
The pressure scale is min(rate ÷ 30 × 100, 100). The 30-per-100,000 ceiling is a visualization choice, not an internationally defined moral threshold. Raw rates and reference years remain visible beside the normalized value.
What it cannot prove
Definitions, reporting systems and update schedules vary. A national rate can hide strong local differences and does not explain the causes of violence.
